Autumn One

We will be exploring a range of texts linked to our topic, ‘Seasides’. The children have already enjoyed writing a recount about the Summer holidays. It sounds like they all had a great time!

The children will have the opportunity to write for a range of purposes. We will be using the book, Meerkat Mail to identify the key features of a postcard. Sunny the Meerkat will be visiting Sawley and the children will have the opportunity to write their own postcards. We will be exploring narrative through the books, Winnie at the Seaside and Rainbow Fish. The children will be retelling stories, developing their understanding of story structure and using this to innovate their own stories. The children researching a country of their choice and presenting this in the form of a travel brochure. They will also be writing their own seaside poems using the well-known book by Giles Andreae called Commotion in the Ocean.

The children will be learning how to spell common exception words and the rules for spelling past and present tense verbs. Spelling tests will take place every Friday. During this session the children will also be given new spellings. Fun spelling activities will also be available on Spellodrome for the children to access at home.

The children will further develop their understanding of punctuation ensuring they are consistently using capital letters and full stops. They will learn how to use expanded noun phrases in their independent writing. The children will develop their understanding of the different types of sentences - statements, commands, exclamations and questions.
