Local Governing Body
Sawley Infant and Nursery School Local Governing body (LGB) is a committee of the ONE Academy Trust Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees delegate responsibility to the LGB to fulfil governance functions related to Sawley Infant & Nursery School. These are set out in the trust Articles of Association, Scheme of Delegation and Terms of Reference (copies are available to view in the Policies and Documents section on the ONE Academy Trust Website:
The Local Governing Body (LGB) consists of up to 10 members and a governance professional (clerk). Our staff, parents, community and associate governors work together with a common goal; to provide the best possible school environment and education for our children here in Sawley Infant & Nursery School.
Our Local Governing Body works with the headteacher and the ONE Academy Trust Board of Trustees to provide:

We take pride in working to support the staff and children so that our school can provide a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment where every child can realise his or her potential.
We hold full governing body meetings at least four times during the school year. We also meet as and when required to engage with the school community, fulfil our monitoring role and support the school.

Becoming a school governor
Vacancies for parent governors and community governors arise from time to time, and we always welcome hearing from you if you are interested in either role. There is also more information about the role of governors in the Meet the Governors section of our website. Being a governor is a voluntary role. It can be enjoyable, challenging and rewarding and our governors have a real part to play in making our school successful and supporting our children to sparkle & shine.
Community governors (also called co-opted governors) are appointed by the governing board for the skills they can contribute. The school has an appointment process for community governors which includes completing an application form, having a short interview and visiting the school. This provides an opportunity for both you and the school to make an informed decision about your potential appointment. The governing board will also take up references before confirming any decision to appoint. To strengthen the skills profile of the board, we may seek specific skills or experience in key areas. However, the most important requirement is your commitment to the school and effective team work.
Our parent governors are elected by parents. They bring their experience of being a parent to the governing board. No special qualifications are needed; the most important thing is to want to support the school and to be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work.

All appointments are subject to statutory checks for eligibility, including an enhanced DBS check.

How to apply
Our parent governors are elected by and from the parents of pupils attending our school. Parents or individuals exercising parental responsibility for a child registered at the school are eligible to stand for election. NB: If your child is about to start at our school and you are interested in the role of parent governor, you can complete a self-nomination form early in the Autumn Term.
If you would like to stand for election, please complete a nomination form downloadable below or available as a printed copy from the School Office on request. Your completed form must be returned to the school no later than noon on 12th September 2025.
It can be:
- Emailed to the school office inf-enquiries@sawley-inf.derbyshire.sch.uk clearly marked Parent Governor Election in the subject line),
- Delivered by hand in a sealed envelope clearly marked Parent Governor Election
- Sent with a child registered at the school in a sealed envelope clearly marked Parent Governor Election
- Sent by first class post in a sealed envelope clearly marked Parent Governor Election
A sealed box will be available in the Reception Area for posting your form. You are responsible for ensuring that your nomination form is received by the deadline and ensuring it has been received.
If we receive more applications than there are vacancies, we will ask if you are willing to take part in an election for the position before running the election. A secret ballot will be carried out in which all parents and those exercising parental responsibility will be entitled to vote.
